Turmeric Quality Standards: Curcumin Content Guide for Importers

Understanding grades, specifications and lab reports for Indian turmeric.

Why Curcumin Content Matters

Curcumin is the primary active compound in turmeric, responsible for its distinctive yellow colour, flavour, and health benefits. Curcumin content varies significantly by variety and growing region — typically ranging from 1.5% to 5%+ in Indian turmeric.

Buyers in the pharmaceutical, nutraceutical, food colouring, and functional food industries specify minimum curcumin content as a key purchasing criterion. Higher curcumin content commands a premium price and is essential for applications requiring therapeutic or standardised extract-grade turmeric.

Indian Turmeric Varieties and Their Curcumin Content

India produces a wide range of turmeric varieties, each with distinct curcumin levels and characteristics:

Standard Commercial Varieties

2–3% Curcumin

Erode, Salem, Rajapore, Duggirala — widely grown across Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, and Andhra Pradesh. The most commonly traded grades for general culinary use and food manufacturing.

Premium Varieties

3–4% Curcumin

Nizamabad Bulb, Alleppey — prized for their rich colour and higher curcumin content. Widely used in the EU and North American markets for premium spice brands and food colouring applications.

High-Curcumin Varieties

5–7% Curcumin

Lakadong from Meghalaya — the world’s highest curcumin turmeric. Grown in Northeast India’s pristine highlands. In high demand from pharmaceutical, nutraceutical and organic supplement companies globally.

Turmeric Forms Available for Export

Aethon Overseas supplies turmeric in all major export forms:

Finger Turmeric

Whole dried rhizome fingers. Best for extracting oleoresin or grinding at destination. Available in polished and unpolished grades.

Bulb Turmeric

Larger rounded pieces from the primary rhizome. Used in Ayurvedic formulations and traditional food applications.

Turmeric Powder

Fine-ground, mesh 60–100. The most commonly traded form globally. Available in standard and organic certified grades.

Turmeric Oleoresin

Concentrated extract for food colouring, pharmaceutical APIs, and nutraceutical capsule manufacturing.

Key Quality Parameters to Specify

When placing an order for Indian turmeric, specify the following parameters in your purchase order:

Parameter Specification
Curcumin content Minimum % as per application (2% food grade, 5%+ pharmaceutical)
Moisture Maximum 10% for whole, 8% for powder
Colour value Measured by ASTA method
Volatile oil content 3–5% typical
Foreign matter Maximum 1%
Starch content Minimum 55%
Ash content Maximum 7%

Lab Testing and Certification

All Aethon Overseas turmeric shipments are tested at NABL-accredited laboratories. The Certificate of Analysis (COA) provided with every shipment includes:

  • Curcumin content — tested by HPLC method for highest accuracy
  • Moisture content — verified to meet maximum limits
  • Colour value — ASTA method measurement
  • Ash content — total and acid-insoluble ash
  • Pesticide residue — tested to EU MRL standards (multi-residue panel)
  • Heavy metals — lead, arsenic, cadmium, mercury within safe limits
  • Microbial count — TPC, yeast, mould, E. coli, Salmonella

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

For food-grade applications (spice blends, curry powder, food colouring), specify a minimum of 2–3% curcumin. For pharmaceutical and nutraceutical applications (curcumin supplements, health products), specify 5%+ curcumin — the Lakadong variety from Meghalaya reliably achieves this. Always request lab certification (HPLC method) confirming curcumin content in your COA.
Lakadong is a specific turmeric variety grown in Meghalaya that contains 5–7% curcumin — significantly higher than standard commercial turmeric (2–3%). It is priced at a premium but essential for pharmaceutical extraction, high-curcumin supplements, and premium functional food applications. Standard commercial turmeric is preferred for food manufacturing and general spice use due to its lower cost.
ASTA (American Spice Trade Association) colour value measures the colour intensity of spice products using a spectrophotometric method. For turmeric powder, ASTA colour value is directly related to curcumin content. Standard commercial turmeric is 12–20 ASTA colour; premium turmeric is 20+ ASTA. Always specify minimum ASTA colour value in your purchase order alongside curcumin percentage.
For EU market exports, turmeric is tested using multi-residue LCMS (Liquid Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry) analysis at NABL-accredited laboratories. The test covers 200+ pesticide compounds against EU MRL (Maximum Residue Level) limits set by EFSA (European Food Safety Authority). A full pesticide residue COA is provided with every shipment by Aethon Overseas.
Bulk turmeric for export is available in: double-lined PP woven bags (25kg, 50kg), multi-layer paper bags (25kg), and vacuum-sealed HDPE inner bags within outer cartons for premium grades. Retail private label packaging is available in pouches from 50g to 1kg. All packaging is food-grade and complies with destination country food contact material regulations.
