Why Alphonso Is the World’s Most Sought-After Mango

The Alphonso (“Hapus”) is grown primarily in Maharashtra’s Konkan region — Ratnagiri, Devgad, Sindhudurg. Prized for intense sweetness, saffron flesh, thin skin, and fibreless texture. Exported to USA, UK, EU, UAE, Japan.

Export Documentation

  • APEDA Registration
  • Phytosanitary Certificate (fruit fly compliance)
  • VHT Certificate (required for USA, Japan)
  • GLOBALGAP (for EU retail chains)
  • Pesticide Residue Report

Cold Chain

Pre-cool to 8–10°C within 6 hours. Air freight: 24–48 hours for USA/UK/Japan. Sea: controlled atmosphere containers 10–12°C for Middle East (12–18 days). Shelf life: 15–20 days with proper cold chain.

Alphonso Grading Standards: What the Numbers Mean

Alphonso mangoes are graded by weight — the primary determinant of export price and target market. Commercial grading in the Konkan region follows a standardised weight-band system:

GradeWeight per FruitCount per BoxTarget Market
Premium (A+)250–350g+6–9 per boxJapan, UK gift retail, UAE premium
Export (A)200–250g10–12 per boxUSA, UK, EU supermarkets
Standard (B)150–200g14–16 per boxUAE, SE Asia, processing

Devgad Alphonso carries a GI (Geographical Indication) tag for mangoes from Devgad taluka in Sindhudurg district, commanding a 15–25% price premium over Ratnagiri fruit in premium markets. The GI certification requires documentation of origin from the Devgad Mango Growers' Co-operative. When sourcing for premium retail, specifying "Devgad GI Hapus" adds credibility and justifies higher shelf pricing.

VHT Process Explained: What It Is and Why USA Requires It

Vapour Heat Treatment (VHT) is a phytosanitary treatment required by the USDA-APHIS for all mango imports from India destined for the USA, to eliminate the fruit fly (Bactrocera dorsalis). The process involves heating the fruit in a humidity-controlled chamber to a core pulp temperature of 47.2°C for 20 minutes — effectively sterilising the fruit without chemicals.

VHT is conducted at USDA-approved treatment facilities in India — currently 4–5 certified facilities operate in the Pune-Mumbai corridor, which is why VHT Alphonso shipments originate from these specific locations. The VHT certificate is issued after each treatment session and must accompany the shipment's Phytosanitary Certificate. Buyers importing to USA should confirm their Indian supplier has a registered VHT facility or established relationship with a certified third-party treatment centre. Japan also mandates VHT. EU, UK, and UAE currently do not require VHT for Indian mangoes, though phytosanitary inspection is universal.

Packaging for Export: Protecting Fragile Fruit Over Long Transit

Alphonso mangoes are among the most delicate fruits in the export trade. Packaging must absorb physical shock, maintain temperature, allow gas exchange, and meet airline or cold chain standards:

  • Primary layer: Individual tissue paper wrapping to protect skin from abrasion and reduce ethylene accumulation between fruit
  • Tray: Corrugated paper trays with pre-formed pockets — typically 1-layer 6-pack or 2-layer 12-pack configuration
  • Outer carton: 3–5kg corrugated cartons. Vent holes mandatory for air freight to allow temperature equilibration
  • Pallet: 80–100 cartons per air freight pallet. Sea containers use standard pallets with careful stacking height limits

Modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) — replacing air inside the carton with 5% CO₂ + 5% O₂ + 90% N₂ — extends shelf life by 5–7 additional days and is increasingly used by UK and EU supermarket importers to reduce waste at retail level.
